For decades, navigating the North Bay meant accepting a singular reality: a complete dependency on the perils of the Highway 101 corridor. Commuters, weekend travelers, and locals alike shared the inevitable rhythm of bumper-to-bumper traffic. With the lane expansion in the North Bay, it’s certainly better. However, since its inception, the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) train has steadily dismantled that car-centric narrative. 

Last year, SMART recorded more than 1.1 million passenger trips, an all-time record. And, almost 150,000 bicycles were carried aboard SMART trains. To balance safety with neighborhood peace, local jurisdictions are already coordinating a "Quiet Zone" to ensure upgraded crossing infrastructure removes the need for routine train horns.  

Changing the Commute and Real Estate Equation

The extension expands options for anyone looking to live in Healdsburg while maintaining professional ties further south. Once operational, a commuter can board the train at the Healdsburg Depot, read or work with onboard Wi-Fi down to Larkspur, and seamlessly transfer to the ferry—reaching downtown San Francisco in roughly 90 minutes. This effortless pipeline bypasses the notorious traffic bottlenecks of Novato and San Rafael entirely.
